Back again for the Offseason Breakdown blog, now onto the Charlotte Hornets. I’ll write about what the Hornets did in the offseason, the teams starting 5, strengths and weaknesses, and how I think the Hornets will do this season. Let’s start
Offseason Acquisitions and Loses:
Hornets trade Dwight Howard to Brooklyn for Timofey Mozgov, Hamidou Diallo, 2021 2nd round pick
This was a good trade because everyone knows Dwight is a cancer to any team he is on so if you can get rid of him you’re doing good. Also the Hornets got Mozgov who was traded right away.
Hornets trade Timofey Mozgov to Orlando and Julyan Stone to Chicago for Bismack Biyombo from Orlando
This was a weird trade because both Biyombo and Mozgov are very bad overpaid players so it was weird to see that this trade happened.
Hornets trade the #11 pick to the Clippers for the #12 pick and 2 future second round picks and Charlotte drafts Miles Bridges
This was a good move by the Hornets. The Hornets didn’t want to draft another guard as they got Monk last season. Bridges has potential to be a good player in the league and will have a good rookie season. And if a team can get more picks then you are doing good.
Charlotte signs Tony Parker to a 2 year $10 million contract
This contract came out of nowhere as I always thought Tony Parker would finish his career in San Antonio. Parker will most likely serve as the sixth man and backup to Kemba Walker.
Starting 5:
PG: Kemba Walker
SG: Nicolas Batum
SF: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
PF: Marvin Williams
C: Frank Kaminsky
Strengths:
Of course the key figure on this team is Kemba Walker. Walker is one of the better point guards in the league as he made his second straight all-star game last season. A surprising stat from last season is that the Hornets were #10 in scoring last year with 108.2 PPG. For a team that just misses the playoffs, this is pretty good.
Weaknesses:
Even though Charlotte was able to score a lot last season there biggest weakness was at defense. The Hornets ranked #19 in opponents PPG. The Hornets could be a better team, especially in the Eastern Conference, if they improved their defense.
Offseason Grade: B
Prediction: The Hornets will miss the playoffs once again this season and actually finish 10th in the Eastern Conference for the second season in a row.
