Here is my MLB 2019 Offseason Breakdown Blog. This time it is on the Los Angeles Angels and I will talk about who the Angels acquired and lost, their starting lineup and pitching rotation and my prediction for them this season. Let’s get into the blog.
Offseason Acquisitions and Loses:
Matt Harvey signs a 1 year $11 million contract
Angels finally get Matt Harvey after he decided not to sign with the team when he originally got drafted to the team back in 2007. Well, Harvey isn’t what he used to be, but they have him now.
Garrett Richards signs a 2 year $15.5 million contract with the PadresThe Angles let Richards walk after the past few seasons he was found on the DL for most of those seasons. It’s fine that the Angels let him walk because they quickly replaced him with Harvey.
Jonathan Lucroy signs a 1 year $3.35 million contract
Lucroy has been on the decline the past few seasons, but he is still a very reliable catcher to have.
Justin Bour signs a 1 year $2.5 million contract
In my opinion, Bour is one of the most underrated players in MLB. He’s not the best at making contact with the ball, but when he does it has a good chance of leaving the park. Bour had 20 home runs and 59 RBI’s last season and I bet he will get those numbers up now that he’s going to have a full season out of that shitty Miami ballpark.
Starting Lineup:
C: Jonathan Lucroy
1B: Justin Bour
2B: David Fletcher
3B: Zack Cozart
SS: Anderlton Simmons
LF: Justin Upton
CF: Mike Trout
RF: Kyle Calhoun
DH: Albert Pujols
Starting Rotation:
1. Tyler Skaggs
2. Andrew Heaney
3. Matt Harvey
4. Trevor Cahill
5. Jamie Barria
Offseason Grade: B-
Prediction:
The Angels are in a weird place. They gave Trout his monster contract and everything, but the Angels just don’t look like they will do anything in the coming seasons. They are stuck on the Pujols contract, they have no starting pitching, it’s just what could this team do. Now they do have some talented players like Simmons, Cozart, and Upton to support Trout and when Ohtani returns from Tommy John that will be fun to watch. I have the Angels finishing second in the AL West and making the 2nd Wild Card spot, but losing in that game.
