Back for another installment of my MLB Offseason Breakdown for the 2020 season. If you are new here, what I do is write about all the acquisitions and losses the team had, my projected lineups and rotations, grade for the offseason, and my prediction for the team in the 2020 season. Let’s get into it.
Offseason Acquisition and Loses:
RF Nick Castellanos signs a 4 year $64 million contract
The Reds get a very good player in Castellanos and he is an under the radar type guy. He puts up solid numbers like hitting .289 last season while also having 27 home runs (career-high), 73 RBIs, and 100 runs scored (career-high). Not to mention he had career highs in slugging percentage, .525, and OPS, .863.
2B Mike Moustakas signs a 4 year $64 million contract
Moose is another good player the Reds acquired this offseason as he will probably be put in the middle of this team’s lineup. Moose hit 35 home runs last season with Milwaukee while also driving in 87 runs. Moustakas also can be inserted at third base and first base if needed.
LHP Wade Miley signs a 2 year $15 million contract
The Reds fill out their starting rotation with a solid veteran in Miley. Miley didn’t post the best numbers with Houston as his ERA went down to 3.98, but that will be good numbers for Cincinnati. Miley will most likely serve as the #5 pitcher for the Reds. Even with the high ERA, Miley was able to keep his win-loss record at 14-6 in 33 games started, so that is good to see.
SS Jose Iglesias signs a 1 year $3 million contract with Baltimore
This was the only mess-up I see from the offseason from the Reds. Iglesias got very little money from Baltimore it seems like they could have kept him. Iglesias is a solid player who can get on base so starting Freddy Galvis over him is a downgrade.
Projected Lineup:
C: Tucker Barnhart
1B: Joey Votto
2B: Mike Moustakas
3B: Eugenio Suarez
SS: Freddy Galvis
LF: Jessie Winker
CF: Nick Senzel
RF: Nick Castellanos
Projected Rotation
1. Luis Castillo
2. Sony Gray
3. Trevor Bauer
4. Anthony DeSclafani
5. Wade Miley
Offseason Grade: A
2020 Prediction:
I have very high hopes for the Reds team and see them winning the NL Central and making the playoffs for the first time since 2013. The Reds have a lot of talent on all parts of the field. Their starting pitching looks solid, their offense looks great, and they have some of the best relief pitchers in baseball. The Reds will lose though in the NLDS.
