Back for another installment of my MLB Offseason Breakdown for the 2020 season. If you are new here, what I do is write about all the acquisitions and losses the team had, my projected lineups and rotations, grade for the offseason, and my prediction for the team in the 2020 season. Let’s get into it.
Offseason Acquisition and Loses:
C Yasmani Grandal signs a 4 year $73 million contract with the Chicago White Sox
This was a huge loss for Milwaukee as they lose probably the best catcher in the MLB. Grandal was definitely the best catcher last season where he had a slash line of .246 .380 .468 and hit 28 home runs and 77 RBIs. It’s going to be almost impossible to replace Grandal from this team and the Brewers will see a dip in offensive performance because of it.
2B Mike Moustakas signs a 4 year $64 million contract with Cincinnati
Another big loss for Milwaukee as they lose another guy who can put up good offensive stats. Moose had another good power-hitting season with the brewers last year where he hit 35 home runs and knocked in 87 runners. Milwaukee is losing some significant offensive players and it will hurt them.
RF Avisail Garcia signs a 2 year $20 million contract
The Brewers bring in Garcia after he had one of his best seasons last year in Tampa Bay. Garcia is a player who can hit the ball, hitting .282 last season, get on base, .332, and can hit a couple of dingers, 20. Good pick up on a good contract.
Milwaukee trade RHP Zach Davies and OF Trent Grisham for LHP Eric Lauer and SS Luis Urias
This is an odd trade by the Brewers because they trade one of their best pitchers for two prospects who have not shown much in the MLB yet. Now they both still have time to develop by Zach Davies was far their best pitcher last season, so to trade him when the Brewers had the 5th worst NL ERA is odd. Better hope Lauer and Urias turn out good.
Milwaukee trade a minor league prospect and draft consideration for C Omar Narvaez
So like I said earlier, replacing Grandel is almost impossible, but they did trade for a catcher who had a good season in Seattle last year. Narvaez had career numbers in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, home runs, RBIs, and runs. Milwaukee hopes Narvaez can produce a similar season from last year because they need someone to fill that hole Grandal left.
Projected Lineup:
C: Omar Narvaez
1B: Ryan Braun
2B: Keston Hiura
3B: Eric Sogard
SS: Orlando Arcia
LF: Christian Yelich
CF: Lorenzo Cain
RF: Avisaíl García
Projected Rotation
1. Brandon Woodruff
2. Adrian Houser
3. Brett Anderson
4. Josh Lindblom
5. Eric Lauer
Offseason Grade: C
2020 Prediction:
The Brewers lost som big pieces this offseason and did not do much to help themselves. Like I wrote earlier they did not have a good ERA last season and they did nothing to improve it, really all they did was get worse. I can’t say I expect much from Milwaukee this season except another MVP-like season from Yelich. So when the Brewers finish 3rd in the NL Central and miss the playoffs, do not color me shocked.
