Whoa!!! So much for that culture that was being built in Brooklyn. I was not expecting news like this to come out. I was just enjoying my Saturday morning, writing up some baseball blogs, and all of a sudden the Twitter feed is going crazy. Then I see the Nets fire Kenny Atkinson and I wonder to myself, why? What is the problem with the Nets that they had to fire Atkinson of all people? Yes, the Nets are worse then what they were last year, but Sean Marks should know that Atkinson is not the reason they aren’t as good.
There are a lot of other factors as to why the Nets aren’t as good as last season. Maybe it had to do with signing KD, who is out all this season, and Kyrie Irving, who is the most injury-prone player in basketball who only played 20 games this year, to max contracts and they don’t see the floor together. Maybe it was the fact that they let D’Angelo Russell go for nothing so now they have no player you can really trust at the end of games to win. I don’t know, call me crazy but Spencer Dinwiddie is not a guy you want closing out games. So when I see a tweet like the one below, it really makes me question why they would fire a guy other than it was time to move on. That Atkinson and the Nets “run [the] course together.”
As a Knicks fan reading this tweet, I wish I could see 42 wins. They might barely get 42 combined wins in the last two seasons, and the Nets just made the playoffs and still have good chances of making the playoffs this season. And they fired Atkinson now? Before Kyrie and KD play on the same court together. Now they have to restart everything they built and do it all again.
One last thing
So where are we now? Kenny Atkinson was praised for what he did in Brooklyn to help develop guys like Dinwiddie, LeVert, Harris, and Allen so he is going to be in demand for a future job this offseason, no doubt in my mind. There will be a lot of teams looking to hire a new coach this offseason and as a person whos team does not have a permanent coach right now, I think it only makes sense for him to stay in New York. The Knicks have talented players on their roster who are in need of a coach who can develop him. Players like Frank Ntilikina, who can improve on his scoring ability, and Kevin Knox, who needs to improve everything, can thrive under a guy like Atkinson. I beg Leon Rose to go after Atkinson because he can make this team better. We have the talent and money to be a good team, all that matters is a good head coach.
