MLB 2020 Offseason Breakdown: Kansas City Royals

Back for another installment of my MLB Offseason Breakdown for the 2020 season. If you are new here, what I do is write about all the acquisitions and losses the team had, my projected lineups and rotations, grade for the offseason, and my prediction for the team in the 2020 season. Let’s get into it.

Offseason Acquisition and Loses:
3B Maikel Franco signs a 1 year $2.95 million contract
In an offseason with very little moves for the Royals, this is really the only notable one. Franco had a down season with the Phillies, a season people did not expect. In 2018, Franco’s slash line was .270 .314 .467, while hitting 22 home runs and 68 RBIs. His numbers fell exponentially in 2019 where his slash line was at 234 .297 .409. I think Kansas City will do him right and he will get his number back up from last season.

1B: Ryan O’Hearn
2B: Nicky Lopez
3B: Maikel Franco
SS: Adalberto Mondesi
LF: Alex Gordon
CF: Whit Merrifield
RF: Hunter Dozier
DH: Jorge Soler

Projected Rotation
1. Danny Duffy
2. Brad Keller
3. Jake Junis
4. Mike Montgomery
5. Jorge Lopez

Offseason Grade: D+

2020 Prediction:
The Royals are still in the middle of their rebuild so we should not expect much from them this season. The Royals do have some good talented players like Merrifield, Soler, and Dozier, but the rest of the team is a big yikes. I see them finishing in a similar spot as last season as they will finish 4th in the AL Central.
