Back for another installment of my MLB Offseason Breakdown for the 2020 season. If you are new here, what I do is write about all the acquisitions and losses the team had, my projected lineups and rotations, grade for the offseason, and my prediction for the team in the 2020 season. Let’s get into it.
Offseason Acquisition and Loses:
3B Anthony Rendon signs a 7 year $245 million contract
The biggest hitters contract this offseason went to Rendon and he is well-deserving. Rendon has been one of the better hitters in baseball the past few seasons and he proved it last year where he finished third in MVP voting and made his first All-Star game. Not to mention Rendon lead the MLB in RBIs with 126 and led the MLB in doubles with 44. Also, Rendon had career-high numbers in home runs, 34, RBIs, 126, batting average, .319, OBP, .412. and slugging percentage, .598.
RF Kole Calhoun signs a 2 year $16 million contract with Arizona
The Angels lose their starting right-fielder from last season and its a pretty big loss. Calhoun is a very good power hitter, so to lose him will hurt. It made sense to not bring him back because of the money Rendon got and they do a fine player in Brian Goodwin to take his spot.
RHP Julio Teheran signs a 1 year $9 million contract
Teheran had a fine career in Atlanta, making two All-Star appearances, but he never really lived up to the hype, especially in the past couple of seasons. Since 2017, Tehran went 30-33 with a 4.09 ERA. The Angels are taking a chance on Teheran, and I like it because it can’t be worse than what they had last season.
Los Angeles trades 4 minor league prospects for RHP Dyland Bundy
Good trade from LA, because like I just wrote, anything is better then what they had last year at pitching. The Angels had the second-worst starter ERA in baseball, so to add Bundy is good.
Projected Lineup:
C: Jason Castro
1B: Albert Pujols
2B: Tommy La Stella
3B: Anthony Rendon
SS: Andrelton Simmons
LF: Justin Upton
CF: Mike Trout
RF: Brian Goodwin
DH: Shohei Ohtani
Projected Rotation
1. Julio Teheran
2. Andrew Heaney
3. Dylan Bundy
4. Patrick Sandoval
5. Jose Suarez
Offseason Grade: B
2020 Prediction:
Every year I go into the season thinking the Angels will make the playoffs with Mike Trout alone. He is the best player in baseball, how could they not, but every year I am proven wrong. So this year nothing is changing. They added one of the best players from last season in Rendon. Ohtani is only getting better. Simmons and La Stella are good middle infielders They kind of improved on their starting pitching, what could go wrong. The Angles are going to make the second Wild Card spot. They might lose but it will be a huge win for me.
